Modernizing Your Electrical Setup: Exploring Modular Switches & Socket

To revamp your home or office, it is the small details that can make a huge impact. This can be done by changing the switch and socket. Nowadays, we all use modular switches and sockets, which offer a modern vibe to any space. Various other types of switches and sockets can add to the aesthetics of your house. In this article, we will delve into the world of switches and sockets, which amp up the electrical setup of a space.

What is switch and socket? What are the types of sockets?

A switch is an electrical device that can connect and disconnect the flow of electricity. On the other hand, a socket offers a connection to an electrical power supply. Switches and sockets work together on an electrical board to offer electricity to different appliances. There are various types of electrical sockets and switches. Let’s understand them one by one.

1. Plug Sockets:

These are a type of socket used to plug in electrical appliances like printers, hairdryers, lamps and more. Plug sockets are subdivided into two types: single-plug sockets and double-plug sockets.

2. Shaver Sockets:

Mostly fitted in bathrooms, shaver sockets secure power and recharge electric shavers and toothbrushes using two-pin connectors. These sockets keep users away from the electrical circuit, thereby reducing the risk of shocks. To complement any bathroom decor, shaver sockets come in different shapes and finishes.

3. USB Sockets:

These are single or double plug sockets with additional outlets for connecting USB chargers. This type of electrical socket makes it convenient for charging portable electronics like tablets and smartphones without using the included connectors. These sockets are usually available with 1 to 3 USB outlets. They have ports for Type A and Type USB chargers.

4. TV Sockets:

Also known as coaxial sockets or aerial sockets, TV sockets connect a television or a signal receiver to the cable that leads to an antenna on a roof or in a loft. These sockets may be fitted in any room where a television is required. Each TV socket may accept one aerial lead that is hooked into a single television.

What are the 4 types of switches?

The four main types of switches are single pole single throw, single pole double throw, double pole single throw and double pole double throw.

1. Single Pole Single Throw:

Also known as a toggle switch, this one has one input and one output. It only controls one electrical wire and a single connection established by it. A single-pole single-throw switch acts as an ON and OFF switch. When the electrical circuit is closed on set as ON, current flows through the terminals. When the switch is OFF or open, there is no flow of current between the terminals.

2. Single Pole Double Throw:

This switch has three terminals. Of these three terminals, one acts as an input, while the other two are output terminals. Of the two output terminals, one is joined to a common terminal. These switches are mostly used in three-way circuit boards.

3. Double Pole Single Throw:

This switch has two poles, meaning two identical switches which are placed side by side. One toggle switch operates this one, which means that two distinct circuits may be regulated simultaneously with a single push.

4. Double Pole Double Throw:

This single switch is equal to two single pole double throw switches. Two distinct circuits connect each circuit’s two inputs to one of the two outputs. The number of routes is determined by the switch's position, and each contact can be routed from either of the two contacts.

What does modular mean in electrical?

Modular in electrical refers to the wiring system that allows users to detach and attach the cables as they please. With this system, there are now modular switches and sockets available. Both modular switches and sockets have sleek designs, and they bear more capabilities than conventional switches and sockets.

What is a modular switch?

Modular switches are one step up from conventional switches which have a modern design and operate the flow of current in a circuit by cutting off and releasing the whole circuit. Like other switches, modular ones are also mounted on the wall and have two or more sets of terminals arranged horizontally on one side.

What is a modular socket?

Modular sockets are used in public or industrial electrical switchboards to connect tools, devices, electronic non-modules, and electrical equipment. Modular sockets offer a robust and shuttered design, making them apt for use even for a child. These sockets are versatile in nature and can connect any application to the power supply.

What is the difference between modular and non-modular switches?

The difference between modular and non-modular switches is tabulated below.

Modular Switches

Non-Modular Switches

A wiring cable and metal screws are not needed.

To set up non-modular switches, it is essential to have metal screws and wiring cable.

Installation of modular switches is quite simple.

With wiring cables and screws, the installation of non-modular switches can be difficult.

Reduces the risk of electrical shock.

The risk of electrical shocks is high with non-modular switches.

Modular switches are easily customizable and can meet the changing needs of customers.

It cannot be customised. So, to meet the changing needs of customers, these switches have to be replaced.

These switches can elevate the look of houses or offices.

These cannot be recommended for interior decoration.

The life span of modular switches is high.

The life span of modular switches is low.
